John Wikan

John Wikan, age 82, of Waukon, formerly of Decorah, died Saturday, January 29, 2011 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Services were held Thursday, February 3 at Decorah Lutheran Church, Decorah, with Rev. Bryan Robertson officiating. Interment was in the Lutheran Cemetery, Decorah.
John Henry Wikan was born September 6, 1928, the son of Halver Halverson Wikan and Amanda Louise (Meisner) Wikan in Elkader. John attended country school near Elkader. He married Margaret “Peggy” Ruth Klotzbach October 28, 1948 at St. John’s Lutheran Parsonage in Locust, and to this union eight children were born.
John worked construction for Holland Brothers and Taylor Construction, both in Decorah, as well as farming near Decorah. In his younger days, he played guitar and sang in a band. John’s hobbies included fishing, playing cards, hunting and his CB radio. After retirement, his CB radio hobby grew into a business, known as “Johnnie’s Communications”, where he put radios into school buses in the tri-state area. John was a longtime member of the Decorah Lutheran Church.
John is survived by his wife, Margaret “Peggy” Wikan of Waukon; two sons, Ron (Kathy) Wikan of McGregor and Ed (Lou Ann) Wikan of Waukon; three daughters, Mary Murphy of Decorah, Pam (Dale) Jones of Waukon, and Charlene Bender of Prairie Du Chien, WI; one daughter-in-law, Margie Wikan (Daryl) Moen of Decorah; 18 grandchildren, Rob (Jennifer) Wikan, Mendy (Derek) Cheseboro, Amy (Eric) Lensing, Tara (Dan) Stoddard, Gretchen (Chris) Lettau, Eric Wikan, Corissa Wikan, Amanda Wikan, Anna Marie Wikan, Chad Wikan, Cory Wikan, Colin (Jennifer) Wikan, Courtney Wikan, Robert Jones, Brian (Renee) Jones, David Bender, Megan Bender and Daniel Bender; 16 great-grandchildren, Aspen and Rilee Wikan, Alan, Deacon and Drake Cheseboro, Alexa and Ashlyn Lensing, Aidan and Kyra Stoddard, Finn and Marit Lettau, Connley Wikan, Robert John Jones, Jr., Emma and Isabella Pugliese, and Tyler Jones; one sister-in-law, Ardis Klotzbach of Decorah; as well as many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Halver Halverson Wikan and Amanda Louise (Meisner) Wikan; three sons, Darrell in 1952, David in 1974, and William in 1997; four brothers, Edwin, Robert, Harold and Lawrence Wikan; four sisters, Marie (Mary) Hill, Victoria Stendel, Phylis Kuehl, and Helen Robinson; and one son-in-law, Kim Murphy in 2008.
Casketbearers were Rob Wikan, Chad Wikan, Robert Jones, Amy Lensing, David Bender, and Gretchen Wikan (represented by her brother, Eric Wikan).
