Marie K. Zimmerman, 95, of Lansing, formerly of Waukon, passed away Sunday, January 30, 2011 at Thornton Manor in Lansing. Funeral services were held Saturday, February 5 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon, with Fr. Joseph Schneider and Rev. Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg officiating. Burial was at St. Mary’s Lycurgus Cemetery, rural Waukon.
Marie Kathryn Dougherty Zimmerman was born May 24, 1915 in Waukon, the oldest daughter of Leo and Stella (Haas) Dougherty. She attended St. Patrick Catholic High School and graduated from Waukon High School in 1932. June 8, 1937, Marie was united in marriage to Herbert William Zimmerman at St. Mary’s Catholic Church Lycurgus. Marie and Herb farmed in the Lansing area and moved from the farm to Waukon in 1980. Marie was employed with the Allamakee Community School District in food service from 1960-1985, becoming the Director of the Food Service Department.
Marie was proud of her Irish heritage and always welcomed family and friends into her home. Cream puffs and cloverleaf rolls were a favorite of many guests. In addition to being a talented baker, Marie also kept busy with many embroidery and crochet projects. Following her retirement, she continued to volunteer, always willing to help at the Waukon Senior Center, hospital auxiliary, nursing homes, church functions, and the hot lunch program at St. Patrick Catholic School. She enjoyed playing cards and was a member of several card clubs. Marie also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and following their many activities over the years.
Marie is survived by two daughters, Janet (Wayne) Kreitzer of Cresco, and Kay Zimmerman of Waukon and special friend Don Hrdina of Rochester, MN; two grandchildren, Scott Kreitzer of Mason City, and Krissy Kreitzer of Cresco and special friend Bryon Houlgrave; two sisters-in-law, Sally Zimmerman and Shirley Rose; a brother-in-law, Charles Bakke; two step-sisters-in-law, Arlene Rooney and Sylvia Hayes; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Leo and Stella Dougherty; her husband, Herbert Zimmerman, who died in 1986; and two sisters, Leone (Henry) Lippe and Stelle (Fiske) O’Hara.
Casketbearers were Scott Kreitzer, Dave Zimmerman, Steve and Dean Bakke, Ron Lippe and Merle Hershberger.Waukon Standard, February 9, 2011
