Morris J. Mathis, 79, of Waukon, died Thursday, April 17, 2003, at Northgate Care Center in Waukon following a brief illness. Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 22 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Waukon, with Fr. Joseph Schneider officiating. Burial was in
Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon assisted with arrangements. Morris
James Mathis was born December 7, 1923, on the rural Lansing farm of his parents, Adolph
Joseph and Nellie (Burns) Mathis. He grew up in the rural Lansing area, was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph's at Paint Rock Catholic Church, and graduated from Waterville High
School. Following his schooling, he began farming with his father and brothers. Later, he spent several seasons working the harvests in the western plains. On November 14, 1959, he
married Vila Clara Schnuelle in Waukon. Morris and Vila farmed together in Ludlow Township
until 1981, when they retired and moved to Waukon. He has been a resident of Northgate Care
Center for the past year.Morris was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. He liked to stay up on current events, particularly in politics. He also enjoyed playing cards, attending auctions, and visiting with his friends and family. Survivors include a daughter, Jo Ann (Brian) Winkie of Palo, Iowa; a step-son, Dale (Debbie) Herrmann of Waukon; a daughter-in-law, Laurie Hoisington of Waukon; seven grandchildren; and two brothers, Delbert "Bud" (Ann) Mathis and
Willis "Buster" Mathis, both of Waukon. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife,
Vila; a son, Curtis Mathis; a step-son, Dean Herrmann; two brothers, Everett and Raymond;
and a sister, May. Casketbearers were Danny, Cletus, and David Mathis, Glen Reed, Jerry
Schnuelle, and Kevin Hoisington.
