Frieda (Saak) 1902-1987 and Vern Hugo Hanke - 1900-1987

Funeral services for Vern Hugo Hanke and Frieda Esther Hanke, husband and wife, were held Friday, May 8 at 1:30 p.m. at Zalmona Presbyterian Church with the Rev. James Jacobson officiating. Frieda died Tuesday, May 5, 1987 and Vern died Wednesday, May 6, 1987 at Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Middle Amana, Iowa. Burial was in Zalmona Cemetery with Martin Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers for Frieda were Roger Grotegut, Robert Nash, Neil Becker, Henry Schmidt, Roger Hesse, and James Meier. Casket bearers for Vern were Lyle Guese, Calvin Henning, Duane Duvel, Ray Shafer, Donus Duvel, and Walter Teslow.

Frieda, age 84, was born on June 3, 1902 in Union Prairie Township, Allamakee County, Iowa to Henry and Mary (Sanderman) Saak. She attended Southwest Bell rural school and was a lifelong member of the Zalmona Presbyterian Church. On April 14, 1927 she married Vernon Hanke in Waukon, Iowa. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Helen and three brothers, William Saak, George Saak, and Arthur Saak.

She is survived by a brother Ralph Saak of Waukon, Iowa. Vern and Frieda are survived by their daughter Mrs. Joan M. Hopp of Homestead, Iowa; 5 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Vernon, age 86, was born November 4, 1900 in Ludlow Township, Allamakee County, Iowa to Karl Charles and Henrietta (Guese) Hanke. He attended local rural schools and was confirmed on May 28, 1915 at Salem Church by the Rev. Stubi. He and his wife Frieda celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in April. They were local area residents before moving to Homestead in 1979.

He was preceded in death by his wife, two brothers, Charles Hanke, and Paul Hanke, and a sister Minnie.
