Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Funeral services for Robert Burling were held Friday, June 27, 1986 at 10:30 a.m. at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City, Iowa and at 2:30 p.m. at the Community Presbyterian Church in Postville, Iowa. The Rev. Fred Moore and Dr. Paul Heath, both of Charles City officiated. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville, Iowa was in charge of local arrangements. Casket bearers were James Bristol, Hugo Federhart, Dan Frudden, Richard Turpen, Marvin Chevalier, and Charles Kelly, Jr.
Robert Hale Burling, son of William Hale and Edna (Holter) Burling, was born July 19, 1918 at Postville, Iowa. He died June 25, 1986 in the Floyd County Memorial Hospital at Charles City, Iowa. He graduated from Postville High School in 1936, the University of Iowa in 1940 and the University of Iowa Law School in 1942. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. On August 22, 1946 he was united in marriage to Merna Aitchison in the Community Presbyterian Church in Postville, Iowa. They were the parents of three sons. Bob began his law practice in Postville, Iowa in 1946 and retired in 1980. They moved to Charles City in July of 1980.
He was a member of the Congregational Church in Charles City, Iowa. He had served on the Prudential Board, a past member of the Community Presbyterian Church in Postville and had served as a ruling elder, the Arthur F. Brandt American Legion Post No. 518 of Postville, a retired member of the Iowa Bar Association, a past member of the Board of Directors of Comprehensive Systems, the Citizen State Bank of Postville, the Joint County Board of Education for Allamakee, Howard, and Winneshiek Counties and Education Board for Allamakee, Howard, and Winneshiek Counties, the Presidents Club University of Iowa, and University of Iowa Alumni Association. Bob had served as the Justice of the Peace in Postville and as Mayor from 1951 to 1953.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Merna; 3 sons, William Burling of Wheaton, Illinois, James Burling of Nahant, Massachusetts and Richard Burling of Charles City, Iowa; a brother, Carl Burling of Barrington, Rhode Island, and a sister, Bernice Schroeder of Columbia, Missouri.
