Funeral services for Laurene E. Garms were held Monday, March 23, 11 a.m. at Garden City United Methodist Church, Monona, Iowa. Rev. Marion Bloodworth officiated. Burial was in the Smithfield Cemetery, Volney, Iowa. Schultz Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were Tom Rose, Cletus Rose, Tom Looney, John Garms, Jeff Hildebrand, and Robert "Rex" Rechsteiner.

Laurene was born December 12, 1925 in rural Allamakee County near Volney, Iowa to Dell and Sarah (Cowell) Rose. She was baptized and confirmed at the Volney Methodist Church. She received her education in Luana School. On December 30, 1949 Laurene was married to Robert C. Garms at the Lutheran Parsonage in West Union, Iowa. They were the parents of 2 sons. The couple lived in Dubuque, Iowa since December 7, 1950. She died at Finley Hospital in Dubuque, on March 19, 1987, following a sudden illness. She was gifted with artistic talent and widely known for her sand paintings.

Preceding her in death were her parents; one son, Mark Alan Garms who died July 28, 1963; 6 brothers, Raymond Rose, Harold Rose, Robert Rose, Delbert Rose, James Rose, and Joseph Rose; 2 sisters, Bernita Siverly and Delores Rose.

Surviving is her husband Robert Garms, one son Dan Garms and his wife Jeanne of Barrington, Illinois; 2 grandson, Gabe Garms and Matt Garms; 2 sisters, Mrs. Bernice Schlitter of Monona, Iowa and Mrs. Carole Huseman of Dubuque, Iowa.
