Elmer Lee Smith, age 41, former Waukon area resident, was killed in a logging accident in Sunlight Basin near Cody, Wyoming on October 8, 1985. Services were held at Ballards Funeral Home in Cody on October 11 at 2 p.m. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery with Rev. J.A. Selvey officiating. Pallbearers were Terry Whitpan, George Brainard, Dennis Benson, Van Largent, Joe Wolf, and Ron Nading.

Elmer was born November 12, 1943 in Waukon, Iowa to A. Milburn and Vivian (Reinhardt) Smith. He attended school in Allamakee County. He married Leonette Hastings in Waukon, Iowa on February 8, 1964. He worked at Hygrade Packing Plant in Postville, Iowa for 15 years until 1980 when he moved to Cody. He was employed by Cody Lumber Company. He was a member of the NRA, IHMSA, and the Cody Shooting complex. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

He was preceded in death by his father A. Milburn Smith. Surviving are his wife Leonette; one daughter Corene Smith of Rochester, Minnesota; 4 sons, Milburn, Aaron, Emery, and Eric, at home; his mother, Vivian (Smith) Wintrick of Rochester, Minnesota; 3 brothers, Larry Smith of Spring Grove, Minnesota and James Wintrick and Donald Wintrick of Rochester, Minnesota; 2 sisters, Evelyn Posthumus and Marsha Coe of Rochester, Minnesota; his grandfather Chris Reinhardt of St. Paul, Minnesota.
