Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 10 at Glenwood Lutheran Church, rural Decorah, Iowa for Herman F. Stendel, age 68 of Waukon, Iowa who died Sunday, February 7, 1988 at Veterans Memorial Hospital. The Rev. Landis Olson officiated at the 1:30 p.m. services and burial was in the church cemetery. Martin Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were Rodney and Jeff Potter, Ed, Bob, and Bill Wikan, Gary Hill, George Kuehl, and Michael Jeide. Honorary pallbearers were Wilbur Wilkins, Leonard Larson, Lawrence Ward, and Urban Magner.

Herman was born May 14, 1919 in Elkader, Iowa to Charles and Eva (Dill) Stendel. He attended rural Clayton County schools. On May 19, 1940 he married Victoria Wikan in Elkader, Iowa. They farmed in the Elkader area before moving to the Waukon are in 1943. She died May 26, 1985. He was a retired farmer and loved horses, fishing, hunting, playing cards, and family gatherings. He was a member of Glenwood Church.

Surviving are four daughters: Mrs. Ray (Sharon) Pratt of Gainesville, Georgia, Mrs. Mary Ann Jeide of Waukon, Iowa, Mrs. Gary (Susan) Enyart of Boulder, Colorado, and Mrs. Michael (Margie) Schulte of Dorchester, Iowa; two sons, Charles Stendel of DeSoto, Wisconsin and Herman "Bud" Stendel of Boulder, Colorado; 21 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Esther Potter of Iowa City, Iowa.
