Funeral services were held for Urban V. Hawes, age 84, of Harpers Ferry, Iowa on Tuesday, August 2 at 10:30 at St.Ann's-St.Joseph's Catholic Church in Harpers Ferry. The Rev. Duane Raftis officiated. Hanson Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. Burial was held in Paint Rock Cemetery. His grandchildren served as pallbearers: Larry, Jack, and Linda Schulte, Terry and Shawn Hawes, and Lisa Cordova. Honorary pallbearer was David Hawes.

Urban died Friday, July 29, 1988 at Thornton Manor nursing home in Lansing, Iowa. He was born December 20, 1903 in Lafayette Township, Allamakee County, Iowa, to John J. and Catherine (Rafter) Hawes. He attended Harpers Ferry High School. On June 16, 1931 he married Ruth C. Farley at St.Ann's-St.Joseph's Church. They lived on the family farm in the Wexford area until retiring, moving into Harpers Ferry in 1964. Urban was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, Wexford, and also of St,Ann's-St.Joseph's.

Preceding him in death were his parents; 2 brothers, Leo Hawes of Lansing, Iowa and Charles Hawes who died in infancy; 2 sisters, Marie Cota of Harpers Ferry and Kathryn Whalen of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

He is survived by his wife; 3 children, Laurayne Schulte and Daniel Hawes of Harpers Ferry, and Ruth A. Cordova of Waterloo, Iowa; 2 brothers, Leonard Hawes of Hastings, Nebraska, and Clem Hawes of Harpers Ferry; 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
