Alys A. Smerud, age 51, of Waukon, Iowa died Friday, August 5, 1988 at University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa. Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, August 8, at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Eitzen, Minnesota. The Rev. Anthony Straseske officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery in Caledonia, Minnesota. Haugen-Roble Funeral Home in Caledonia was in charge of arrangements.

She was born December 25, 1926 in Caledonia, Minnesota to Dewey and Lydia (Pinski) Heaney. She married Donald Smerud February 14, 1956 in Caledonia, Minnesota. She attended Caledonia High School and lived in New Albin and Dorchester, Iowa areas. Prior to moving to Waukon in 1985, she had worked for the Northern Engraving Company in Spring Grove, Minnesota and Waukon, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her father and a daughter.

Survivors include her husband; her mother of Caledonia, Minnesota; 5 sons, Daniel and Jeffrey of Jacksonville, Florida, Randall of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Dale and Gary, both of Waukon, Iowa; a daughter, Lori Smerud; seven grandchildren; 2 brothers, Harold and Earlin Heaney of Caledonia, Minnesota; one sister, Evelyn Halverson of Dorchester, Iowa; and one half sister, Luella Smith of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.
