Funeral services have been set for Thursday, March 16 for Gayle Lillis Smith, 73, of Monona, Iowa who died Monday, March 13, 1989 at Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. The 1 p.m. services will be held at Rossville Presbyterian Church with the Rev. James Jacobson officiating. Burial will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery with Martin Funeral Home of Waukon in charge of arrangements.

She was born October 3, 1915 in Linton Township, Allamakee County to William and Mary (Melcher) Thias. She attended the Big Foot School through the eighth grade and one year at Waterville High School. On January 8, 1936 she married Lee Smith in Waukon, Iowa. He died September 19, 1979. She was a lifetime area resident and a member of Big Foot Study Club and Rossville Presbyterian Church where she was very active in church groups and held many offices.

Surviving are a daughter, Mary Anne Kaeser of rural Waukon; six grandchildren, Paul, Todd, Gary, Elizabeth, Gwen, and Jan Kaeser; a great-grandson, Andy and a brother Wesley Thias of Monona, Iowa.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Mitzi, a sister Violet, and an infant brother Arthur.

Casket bearers are Wesley Lawson, Eugene Thias, James McNally, Otto Thorstenson, Darrell Mitchell, and Ronald Adam. Honorary pallbearers are Paul, Todd,and Gary Kaeser, Tony Wille, Vernon Melcher, Elizabeth and Jan Kaeser, and Gwen and Alan Hoth.
