John G. Schellhammer - 1895-1989

Funeral services were held Monday, April 24 for John G. Schellhammer, 93, who died Thursday, April 20, 1989 at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon, Iowa. The 11 a.m. services were held at Zion United Church of Christ with the Rev. Henry Heinbuch officiating. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery with Martin Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were Harlan, Ralph, Morris, Ernie, and Glen Schellhammer, Walter Zimmerman, Harvey Rissman, Harold Marti, and Eugene Oesterle.

John was born June 21, 1895 in Postville, Iowa to George and Kathryn (Vitz) Schellhammer. He attended rural Allamakee County schools and on May 5, 1925 he married Martha Vieth. They farmed in the Lansing, Iowa area until 1947 when they moved to the Glenwood area to farm. They moved to Waukon in November 1959 when they retired from farming. He worked as a custodian at Waukon City Park for 15 years until the age of 80. He received a plaque in recognition of his outstanding and dedicated service as a custodian. He was a member of Zion UCC and Farm Bureau.

Surviving are his wife, three daughters, Mrs. John (Helga) Lenz of Payson, Arizona; Mrs. Gene (Frieda) Riley of Bellvue, Nebraska, and Mrs. Ray (Lorraine) Mitchell of Rossville, Iowa; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, a brother, George Schellhammer of West Bend, Iowa and a sister, Mrs. John (Laura) Oesterle of Waukon, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his three sisters, Lizzie, Christina, and Flora, and two brothers, Gottlieb and Charles Schellhammer.
