Sudden Passing of Pioneer
The usual Sabbath quiet of this peaceful community was startled Sunday morning by news of the death of John W. Bakewell late the night before. He had been downtown the Saturday evening to get· shaved and after returning home was stricken with paralysis and died at 11 pm.
Deceased ·was born in Center township March 28, 1854, and spent the whole of his life in Alamakee county; farming in Lansing most of the, time until he came to this city six years ago. He was married October 26, 1880 to Catherine Phillippi, they being the first couple united in holy wedlock by Msgr Haxmeier, who came to Lansing that year. Five children all living, were born to them as follows: William and Mrs. Frank Morgan of New Albin; John P. of St Paul; Sister Mary Cleta of St Rose Convent La Crosse; and Mrs. Wm Scholtes of Lansing township.
_The children all having left the old nest, Mr and Mrs Bakewell built a cozy home on Main street after moving to this city in which to spend their declining years in peace and comfort. But soon she became, an invalid and now the husband is called. Truly "Man proposes but the Lord disposes”.
Besides .the widow and children, he is survived by four brothers: William of Lansing; Martin of Faith, S D; Peter of San Francisco; and Edward of Canada; and one sister, Mrs J H Lowe of Anamosa this state.
. Deceased was a quiet inoffensive citizen; a good husband and father; a kind neighbor; and Msgr Haxmeier in mentioning his death from the altar Sunday referred to him as "our old and honored parishioner."
The funeral was held from Immaculate Conception church on Tuesday morning at 9:00 o'clock; Msgr Haxmeier officiating at a Requiem Mass and burial in Gethsemane.
Out of town relatives in attendance at the funeral were: William Bakewell of New Albin; John P Bakewell of St Paul; Mrs Frank Morgan of New Albin; Sister Mary Cleta of La Crosse; Mrs J H Lowe and son Edward of Anamosa; Mike Phillippi of St· Paul; Barney and Frank Morgan and D J Kelly of New Albin.
