Cletus D. Winter, 71, of Waukon, died Friday, July 23, 2004, in rural Monona following a sudden illness. Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 27 at Salem United Church of Christ, rural Waukon, with Pastor Judy Scheer officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon was in charge of arrangements. Cletus Duaine Winter was born June 8, 1933, in Jefferson Township, rural Waukon, Iowa, the son of Alfred and Nellie (Livingood) Winter. He attended rural Allamakee County elementary schools and Postville High School, and then served in the U. S. Army. On March 24, 1957, he married Janice Duvel at Salem United Church of Christ in rural Waukon, where he was later baptized and confirmed. He started farming for Donald Flage, then farmed on his own in Ludlow Township. Later he did mechanic work for several area implement dealers and worked at Northern Engraving in Lansing before retiring in 1995. Cletus was a member of Salem United Church of Christ and the American Legion. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandson. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially trout fishing, going for rides in the countryside, and trapping pocket gophers. He also enjoyed playing cards. Survivors include his wife, Janice of Waukon; a daughter, Gwen (Mike) Lloyd of Harpers Ferry; a son, Greg (Jean) Winter of Waukon; eight grandchildren, Dan Lloyd (fiancee Lacy O'Neill), Jeremy, Elizabeth, Patricia, and Shawn Lloyd, Heather Winter (fiance Chad Jones), Nick Winter and friend Linda Hammel, and Ashley Winter; one great-grandson Kody; two sisters, Virginia Halverson and Margaret (Calvin) Shindoll, both of Waukon; two sisters-in-law, Marilyn Winter of Waukon and Marjorie Winter of Postville; and his mother-in-law, Leona Duvel of Waukon. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son Wade; and three brothers, Calvin, Gilbert, and Edwin. Honorary casketbearers were his grandchildren and great-grandson. Casketbearers were Ronald Jahnke, Virgil Opfer, Gerald Schroedel, Duane Miller, James Kloke, and Emmett Nolting.
