Louis Meyer Passes Thursday Morning; Funeral Held Sunday

Resided Here 65 Years; Was Prominent Farmer Until Retiring in 1919

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at St. Paul’s Lutheran church in this city for Louis Meyer, 80, who had passed away at his home last Thursday. Although in ill health for several years, Mr. Meyer’s condition did not become serious until a few days before his passing. Services were conducted by the Rev. Frederick R. Ludwig and interment was in Postville cemetery.

Mr. Meyer was born in Lavern [Levern], Germany, December 7, 1863, the son of Ludwig and Charlotte Venhard [Wernhardt] Meyer. When eight years old he came to the United States with his parents, one brother and one sister, the first family home being established at Garnavillo. In 1879 he came with the family to a farm near Postville.

On October 8, 1888, Mr. Meyer was united in marriage with Miss Emma Harnack by the late Rev. J. Gass and to this union six children were born, two of whom survive the passing of their father. Mr. and Mrs. Meyer celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on October 8 of last year.

Following their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Meyer settled on the Henry Meyer farm where they remained for three years and then purchased and established the family home on the Henry Kluss farm 4 1/4 miles northeast of Postville. They lived on this place for 28 years, coming to Postville to make their home on August 23, 1919.

Surviving him are his wife and two daughters, Mrs. Elmer Zieman (Adaila), and Mrs. Leo Heins (Mabel), both of this community, two brothers, Henry W. Meier [sic] and C. F. Meier [sic] of Postville, and two sisters, Mrs. George Hein of Postville and Mrs. Wm. H. Hein of Valparaiso, Indiana. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren in addition to numerous other relatives and friends. Preceding him in death were four children, Walter Meyer, Mrs. Horace Gordanier (Ella), Hall Meyer and one son who passed away in infancy, also three sister[s], Mrs. Louise Kamp and two sisters who died in Germany, and one brother, Christ Meier [sic].

He was an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran church of this city city [sic] throughout his residence here.
