Arlene E. Deeny

Arlene E. Deeny, daughter of Elmer and Emma (Bechtel) Snitker was born Sept. 22, 1916 in Waukon, Iowa. She died Nov. 14, 1992 at St. Francis Hospital, LaCrosse, Wis. She was 76.

Arlene attended "Krumme School" in rural Ludlow Township and graduated from Waukon High School.

She was married Nov. 25, 1937 to Bernard Joseph Deeny. She worked as a nurses aid at Veteran's Memorial Hospital for 30 years before retiring in 1989. She also owned and operated the Deeny Hotel in Waukon along with her family since 1957. She liked to raise flowers, quilt and do handiwork. She was a good baker (especially bread) and used to bake wedding cakes for other people.

Arlene also worked as a volunteer for several years at Makee Manor Care Facility, rural Waukon.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband who died March 30, 1968, and an infant son Robert, and brothers Robert, Lawrence, and Walter Snitker.

Survivors include three daughters: Mary Sue (James) Vickery of Ridge Manor, Fla., Linda (Henry) Dirksen of Webster, Fla. and Patricia (James) Clarke of Waukon; two sons: Dennis (Rita) Deeny of Tomah, Wis., and Brian (Kay) Snitker of Waukon; four brothers: Irvin (Arlene) Snitker of Waukon, Merlin (Jean) Snitker of Postville, Ben (Loretta) Snitker of Palo, Iowa and James (Betty) Snitker of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; three sisters: Marion (Robert) Wirkler of Monona, Iowa, Gertrude Hangartner of Postville, and Shirley (Don) Johnson of Decorah. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Funeral services for Arlene Deeny were held Wednesday, Nov. 18, at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Waukon. The Rev. Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg officiated. Burial was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Casket bearers were Ronald, Larry, Darrell and Rick Snitker, Terry Hangartner and William Emo.
