Frederick "Freddy" F. Kelly, a carpenter, lost his life, Tuesday afternoon, February 14, 1928, east of Shelton, Nebraska, when his skull was crushed in a grade crossing accident. Apparently Mr. Kelly did not see the Union Pacific passenger train No. 37 approaching from the east, for his light coupe struck the side of the train, or he was unable to halt his automobile in sufficient time, it is also believed. Mr. Kelly was taken to Shelton on the train and a physician immediately attended him. Later he was taken to Grand Island, on train No. 18 and rushed to the St.Francis Hospital. In an effort to spare his life, surgeons immediately prepared to operate but to no avail, he died from a severe hemorrhage.

Mr. Kelly was driving westward in the same direction as the train was bound. He had made the curve in the highway from the east and was approaching the track from the south when his coupe struck the train. It is reported at Shelton that not long before the accident, Mr. Kelly had been seen halting some distance east of the crossing apparently repairing his auto. It is thought his attention may have been thus somewhat diverted. The fore part of the automobile was completely smashed and the top badly wrecked. The wrecked auto was dragged a distance from the crossing after the impact.

Fred Kelly was born in Paint Creek Township, near Rossville, Iowa to William Morton and Sarah (Lewis) Kelly on January 5, 1874. He married Anna Ummel. They had no children. Besides his widow, Anna, four sisters and three brothers survive. They are Mrs. Mary Ettia Campbell of Sheridan, Wyoming. Mrs. Martha Marie Gast of Nora Springs, Iowa, Mrs. Alice Moore Campbell, Miss Nettie Wilton Kelly, William Kelly, Daniel Kelly, and Jess Kelly, all of Waterville, Iowa

Funeral services will be held from the Kelly home on Friday afternoon at two o'clock. Mrs. Elizabeth Mead, pastor of the Church of the Nazarene officiating.Burial will be at Grand Island, Nebraska Cemetery.
