Helen Dorothy Marting

Funeral services for Mrs. Helen Marting were held Thursday, October 19, 2000 at 11 a.m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville, Iowa. The Rev. Robert Hupp officiated. The casket bearers were David, Matthew and Daniel Lawrence; Stacey and Kevin Corbin; Rick, Larry, Greg, Corey, Todd and Tim Marting. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery.

Helen Dorothy Marting, the daughter of John H. and Emma (Gebhardt) Schmitt, was born August 21, 1910, east of Monona, Iowa, in Clayton County. She passed away Friday, October 13, 2000 in the Good Samaritan Center at West Union, Iowa. She had reached the age of 90 years, one month and 22 days.

She was baptized in 1912 by the Rev. J. B. Bird in the Methodist Church at Monona and confirmed September 13, 1936 by the Rev. H. P. Kumpf in St. John Lutheran Church at Luana, Iowa. Helen was graduated from the Monona High School in 1927 and attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She taught in the rural schools of Clayton County for seven years.

On August 31, 1935 she was married to Elmer Fritz Marting in the Parsonage of St. John Lutheran Church at Luana by the Rev. H. P. Kumpf. To this union five children were born. They farmed in the Luana area until 1960 when they moved to their home on East William Street in Postville.

Helen suffered a stroke in December of 1997 and went to live with her daughter, Barbara and family at Wadena, Iowa. She became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in West Union in September of 1999.

Helen enjoyed antique shopping, collecting dolls, and being with her family. She especially liked to watch her grandchildren and great grandchildren when they would come to visit her in the nursing home.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Elmer (Sr.) who died in 1992, a brother, William, three sisters, Elsie (Mrs. George Wiethorn), Charlotte (Mrs. Bruce Russell) and Marie (Mrs. William Sass).

Surviving are her five children, Elmer L. (Carol) Marting of Monona, IA, Robert (Teh-Ling) Marting of Dublin, CA, Richard (Anne) Marting of Palatine, IL, Elsie Lynne Lawrence of Prairie du Sac, WI, and Barbara Jane (Stanley) Corbin, of Wadena, IA; 16 grandchildren: Lorelei Carol Marting Huelskamp; Lynnette Janie Marting Olson and husband Jim; Leanne Dorothy Marting O'Brien and husband Jeff; Larry Elmer Marting; Gregory Jay Marting and wife Carol; Corey Scott Marting and wife Nancy; Timothy Shawn Marting; Richard Anthony Marting; Theresa Marie Marting Ketchum and husband Ted; Todd Christian Marting and wife Jennifer; David Alan Lawrence and wife Cindy; Matthew Richard Lawrence and wife Wendy; Daniel Robert Lawrence; Stacey Lee Corbin and wife Lori; Alexandra Carol Huelskamp; Daniel Steven Huelskamp, Eryn Lorene O'Brien; Emily Anne O'Brien, Ian Marting; Niki Marting; Cody Marting; Brandi Marting and Melissa Erma Marting of Oelwein, IA and many nieces and nephews.

She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville and a past member of the Order of Eastern Star.
