Bernice Loretta Grangaard Tatro

Bernice Loretta Grangaard Tatro was born on February 3, 1925, to Alex and Mabel (Johnson) Grangaard in Waterville, Iowa. She passed away after a short illness on Saturday, October 9, 2010, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota at the age of 85 years, 8 months and 6 days.

She was baptized and confirmed at Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church, rural Waterville, Iowa. She attended school and graduated from Waterville High School in 1943.

Bernie (Bonnie) was married to Roy DeVere Tatro on October 28, 1943, at the West Paint Creek Lutheran Church, rural Waterville, Iowa. They farmed near Clermont until moving to Elgin in 1972. She moved to an apartment in Clermont in May 2009 and then to Stoney Brook Village in April of this year. Bonnie worked for over 25 years at Valhalla in Clermont. She was an active member of West Clermont Lutheran Church. Along with Roy, she enjoyed going to Iowa Hawkeye football games for many years. She spent lots of time cooking and baking - especially lefsa.

She is survived by daughters, Susan (Robert) Elliott, Sumner, Iowa, and Shirley (John) Kelly, Charles City, Iowa, and sons, Randy, Islamorada, Florida, and Ray, Winchester, Virginia, and four grandchildren, Eric (Natalie) Krueger, Owatonna, Minnesota, Ryan (Tessa) Krueger, Ft. Pierre, South Dakota, Cynthia Kelly, Bend, Oregon and Kyle (Laura) Kelly, Ankeny, Iowa. There are four great-grandsons, Evan, Emmett & Brecken Krueger and Jackson Kelly, and 9 step grandchildren and 18 step great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Arleen Swensen, Decorah, Iowa and numerous nieces and nephews.

Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Roy; a son, Charles, who died at birth; one brother, Walter and a sister, Adeline.

Casket bearers were Eric Krueger, Ryan Krueger, Kyle Kelly, Gary Johnson, Floyd Bolton and Steve Johnson

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 14, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at the West Clermont Lutheran Church in Clermont, Iowa. Pastor William Runaas Jr. will officiate.

Burial will follow in God's Acres Cemetery in Clermont, Iowa.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 13, 2010, from 4-7 p.m. at the Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Clermont, Iowa, and one hour before services at the church.

Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Clermont, Iowa, is in charge of arrangements.
