Funeral services for Mrs. Richard Meyer were held Wednesday, July 26, 2000 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville, Iowa. The Rev. Robert Hupp officiated. Marian Schutte was the organist and Kim Schutte was the soloist. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery.

Darlene Elizabeth (Schroeder) Meyer, the daughter of Edward Christian Schroeder and Nora (Wilke) Schroeder, was born January 16, 1927 on a farm near Postville, Iowa. She passed away Sunday, July 23, 2000 in the Good Samaritan Center at Postville, Iowa. She had reached the age of 73 years, six months, and seven days.

She was baptized June 26, 1927 by the Rev. E. T. Finck and confirmed April 6, 1941 by the Rev. Frederick K. Ludwig, both in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville. Darlene attended the Luana School and graduated from the Postville High School in 1945. Following graduation, she was employed as a cook and waitress at the Thoma Cafe in Postville. On April 15, 1947 she was married to Richard Meyer in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville, Iowa. To this union a daughter, Kathryn, was born.

Darlene had worked as a cook at the Phillips 66 Station, the Koffee Shop, and most recently, the Postville Bakery. She had also been employed at the Koevenig Variety Store. Darlene was an experienced cook and often planned the menus for such occasions as the Alumni Banquet as well as for other events.

She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary serving as Treasurer for many years, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, and of the Big Four Fair Board. She was involved in the local fire department auxiliary, the Business and Professional Women's organization, the Share Program, the Historical Society, and the John R. Mott Committee. Darlene was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville and the Women of the ELCA, the Altar Guild Committee and had served a term on the church Council. She taught both Sunday School and Bible School for many years.

She is preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Milton Schroeder, and a sister, Delores Mae Schroeder.

Surviving are her husband, Richard, of Postville, a daughter, Kathryn and her husband, Dale Westendorf of Westgate, IA, two granddaughters, Karla and her husband, Todd Albers and Kristi Westendorf and her fiance Bryan Shannon, one great granddaughter, Autumn Albers, all of Waverly, Iowa, a brother, Merlin Schroeder and his wife, Michele, of Newark, California, and a sister-in-law, Vila Schroeder, of Farmersburg, Iowa.

Casket bearers were Jason White, Brian Livingood, Randy Plaht, Mike Plaht, Larry Plaht, and Terry Meyer.
