DIES IN SNOWMOBILE ACCIDENT

Timothy Sweeney, 15, Waukon,Iowa was killed about 10 p.m. Monday night, January 24, 1972 when the snowmobile he was operating struck a parked car near the intersection of Second St. and Third Avenue. NE.in Waukon. Investigating officers say Sweeney was going north on Second Street when the accident happened. The snowmobile he was operating was preceded by another one, and officers aren't certain what caused the accident. They say he may have lost control on the slippery street or a gust of wind may have blown snow in front of him, obscuring his vision. Sweeney was pronounced dead on arrival at Waukon Veterans Memorial Hospital. Greg Mathis, operator of the other snowmobile, was also admitted to the hospital for treatment of shock.

Funeral services were set for 11 a.m. Thursday in St.Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon, Iowa. A wake began at 2 p.m. Wednesday in St.Patrick's Church hall.

Timothy R. Sweeney was the son of Ralph and Ileen (Birdsell) Sweeney. He was born in Waukon March 22, 1956 and was a sophomore at Waukon High School at the time of his death. Surviving in addition to his parents are his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Sweeney of Waukon and Mrs. Mabel Birdsell, who has been wintering in Florida. His brothers and sisters are Sister Mary Raeleen, the former Connie Sweeney, Oak Lawn, Illinois; Sister Ileen Marie, the former Patsy Ann Sweeney of Cochaboma, Bolivia; Ron Sweeney, Sharon Sue (Mrs. David) Hogedorn, Sandra Lou (Mrs. Cletus) Sommer, Michael, Fran (Mrs. Greg) Whalen of Apple Valley, California, Jack, Michelle, and Brian.
