Mrs. Matt Bechtel Passes Away

The death of the above named good woman occurred Friday, June 7th, at her home in Lansing from bronchial pneumonia, although her health has been failing in recent months and only last spring she rallied from a critical illness at the home of her daughter in New Hampton.
She was born Nov. 1st, 1863 at Freeport, Ill., as Mary Christoph, a daughter of Dorothy and Herman Christoph. She moved with her family to Iowa, coming to Chickasaw County and in October 1883 was married to Mr. Matt Bechtel at New Hampton. She came to Allamakee County in 1885 and this place has ever since been her home. Her husband preceded her in death in Sept. 1944, as well as two children, William and Mrs. Esther Boos many years ago. Left to mourn the passing of a kind and loving mother are the following eleven children: Sam and Tade, Lansing; Ben, Portland, Ore.; Herman, West Palm Beach, Fla.; George, Washington, D.C.; Mrs. Lydia Frankhauser, Blairsburg, Iowa; Carl, Wichita, Kans.; Mrs. Frank Harvey, Portland, Ore.; Mrs. Wayne Bieber, New Hampton; Mrs. Clarence Kerndt, Waukon; Matt Bechtel of Hampton . Other survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Adolph Boettcher, New Hampton; Mrs. Wm. Schmidt, Lawler; one brother Fred Christopher, New Hampton, besides 26 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
The deceased was a good neighbor and friend, devoted to her home and family, a life long member of the German Presbyterian, where the funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. Albert Kunz officiating and saying the final prayers at the graveside. Burial was in Oak Hill cemetery and pall bearers were Leon Bechtel, Donald Boos, Arthur Boettchner, Herbert Christoph, Clarence Kerndt and Wayne Bieber.
Among out of town relatives attending the funeral services were Mrs. Frank Harvey, Portland, Ore.; Matt Bechtel, Hampton; Mrs. Donald Boos, Lloyd Boos, Fertile; Arthur Boettcher, New Hampton.
