Another Pioneer Called Home - Lansing paper Wednesday October 25, 1911
Brief mention of the serious illness of "Grandma" Zoll was made in these columns last week and ere the paper had reached many of its readers, the tired spirit of this pious old soul had winged its flight to Him who gave it. Death took place at 7:10 Thursday morning at the residence of her son Joe where she had made her home since the death of her husband, the late Joe Zoll, eight years ago.
Deceased was a native of Baden, Germany, born Jan. 31, 1824. She came to America in 1847 and in 1848 was married in New York, coming to this county in 1853, which has since been her home. The family first settled in Iowa township, then came to this city and in 1864 bought the farm in French Creek township which is now the property of their son William, living there until they came here to permanently reside thirty-three years ago. For over thirty years the writer has known her intimately and well. Her life was an open book and we are pleased to know that it bore no record that requires an apology from the living. She was a zealous and devoted Catholic and in her everyday life displayed many of the attitudes of true Christianity. Her faith was as simple as a child's, her heart ever aflame with love of God and her fellowman and she was never so happy as when in His service. She was ever ready to whisper words of encouragement and lend a helping hand to the disconsolate and needy and her charity was such that she never let the right hand know what the left was giving. But her life work is done and well and faithfully performed, her every duty well and cheerfully discharged. Her memory will ever be cherished by children and friends, and while her work here on earth is ended we feel confident that the Eternal Father of Life and Light will be pleased to say to her that it has been well done, and that the awakening in the higher realms of life will bring her peace and contentment. She is survived by four sons and two daughters, as follows: Joseph and
John of this city, William of French Creek, Alex of Chicago, Sister Nothburga of St. Louis, Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Hess of Lafayette. All were present at the funeral, which took place from Immaculate Conception church, where she spent so many happy hours in prayer and meditation. Saturday morning at 9 o'clock, a Solemn Mass of Requiem for the repose of
her soul was celebrated by Dean Haxmeier, with Father Brady of Dorchester as deacon and Father Ryan of New Albin as subdeacon. At the conclusion of the Mass, Father Brady preached in his usual eloquent style, his sermon being comforting but devoid of fulsome flattery and abounding in beautiful lessons for the living. At the conclusion of the services the remains were held in the vestibule of the church awaiting the arrival of Sister Nothburga, who was detained in arriving from St. Louis about an hour, after which interment took place in Gethsemane cemetery.
