From the Waukon Standard Newspaper, April 31, 1890:

DIED.
MARTEN -- At her home on Columbus Ridge, April 17, 1890, Charlotte, wife of Frederick Marten, aged 50 years, 6 months and 10 days. The deceased has been a great sufferer with rheumatism for the past fifteen years, during which time she bore her sickness with christian fortitude. She was a member of the German Methodist church. She leaves a husband, seven children, two brothers, Gottlieb Goettel of Thompsons Corner and Herman of Ackley, Iowa, and four sisters, two of whom were present at her funeral. A devoted wife, a fond and loving mother, an affectionate sister, a true friend, her place must ever remain vacant in the hearts of those who loved her.

There is a place now left vacant,
Gone from the circle a dear loving face,
Leaving around the home hearth
An ever empty place.
But, Oh we believe that she does not forget
To be round us th'o hid from our sight,
That the love of her spirit broods o'er us yet
Th'o our own is now shrouded in night.
A FRIEND.
