GOETTLE - At Thompson's Corners in this county, on Wednesday, March 5th, 1884, of Lung Fever, Gottlieb Goettle, aged 74, 9 months and 7 days.
Julius and Gottlieb Goettle were brothers, both born in Prussia, and as will be seen, both died of the same disease, at nearly the same date. The funeral of both will take place today. Thus after living long lives in company, death came at almost the same hour. A large circle of friends and relatives mourn the death of these good men.

On the same page as the above death notices is the following article. We do not know if Julius and Gottlieb had this disease, which was most likely scarlet fever.
"The Raging Rash"
A disease, called by some "Dutch measles," by others "scarlet rash," is prevailing in this vicinity to an alarming extent. The first symptoms are headache and pains in the back and limbs. If the patient is kept warm and properly cared for, the rash appeas, first on the face, then on the hands and limbs, and finally extends over the entire body. Nearly everyone has been troubled with it; in most cases having it in a mild form and suffering but slight inconvenience. In other cases, colds are contracted from exposure and very serious results follow. Where the disease is neglected lung troubles are almost sure to result. The cases seem more severe of late than they were when the disease first began. It is no trifling matter and the most careful attention should be given to those who show signs of having it. They should be kept warm, prevented from being exposed to the cold, and given warm teas or medicine to throw out the rash. It will be safe to call a physician at the first appearance of the disease, as delay may result in death.
