Steven E. Hager

Steven E. Hager, 58, of Waukon died Monday, July 19, 2010 at his home in rural Waukon. Funeral services were held Monday, July 26 at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, with Pastor Samantha Houser officiating.

Steven Edward Hager was born July 14, 1952 in Waukon, the son of Keith Edward and Elsa (Bahr) Hager. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion United Church of Christ and graduated from Waukon High School in 1970. After attending Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids for a year of electrician training, Steve returned to Waukon, where he was employed as a photographer for Waukon Newspapers.

He moved to Wyoming for a short time before retuning again to Waukon, where he began a long career as a carpenter. He worked first with his uncle, Ernie Lubahn, and then on the building crew at UBC Lumber Company. The last many years he has been a partner with Curt Roe in Hager and Roe Development, LLC.

Steve married Katie Cleghorn May 11, 1985. They were later divorced, but have remained close friends.

Steve was a true outdoor lover. He was a member of Pheasants Forever, enjoyed hunting, cross-country skiing, and bird watching, and took many trips to Canada fishing. He loved spending time on the Mississippi River and especially enjoyed the trip he took with friend Larsh Bristol when they traveled from New Albin to Keokuk during Iowa’s sesquicentennial. He also enjoyed riding his motorcycle, affectionately known as Lucy. Steve’s easy-going personality made him many friends and he enjoyed all their company, no matter what they were doing.

Survivors include his mother, Elsa Hager of Waukon; two brothers, Bob (Kristi) Hager of Dorchester and Donn (Nancy) Hager of Caledonia, MN; nieces and nephews, Shannon (Jeff) Staggemeier and their children, Grayson and Renner, Dusty (Kathy) Hager and their son, Carson, Aubree (Chris) Peterman and their son, Kaden, and Alyssa and Alaina Hager; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Keith.

Casketbearers were Curt Roe, Randy Burke, Rich Wiedner, Roger Claude, Dean Lansing, and Wayne Kloke.
