Leona Nelson, age 95, of New Albin, died Wednesday morning, February 26, 2003, at Thornton Manor Nursing Home in Lansing. Funeral services were held Friday, February 28 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in New Albin, with Msgr. Edward Lechtenberg officiating. Burial was in St. Joseph's Cemetery, New Albin. Thornburg Hanson Funeral Home in Lansing assisted the family with arrangements. Leona was born September 3, 1907, on the Sand Cove, near New Albin, to Louis and Mary (Mauss) Mettille. She married Albert Okee Nelson in October of 1931 at New Albin. She and her husband farmed in the New Albin area until October of 1966, when they moved to their house in New Albin. Leona was a lifelong member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in New Albin and was very faithful and took part in all the activities of the church. She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post #5603 and served for many years as their Chaplain. Leona is survived by three sons, Harold (Jeanette) Nelson of Riverton, Wyo., Joseph (Mona) Nelson of Birmingham, Ala., and Ralph (Kim) Nelson of Tampa, Fla.; eight grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert O. Nelson, and three siblings, Frank Mettille, Ann Colsch, and Mary Mettille. Casketbearers were James Nelson, Arvid Nelson, Gerald Colsch, Shane Nelson, Garland Moe, and Gary Colsch.
