A memorial service was held Monday, Oct. 2, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville, with the Rev. Robert Hupp officiating.

A second memorial service will be held Sunday, Oct. 8, in Tucson, Ariz.

James John Malone was born Jan. 6, 1931 in Postville and raised there.

He proudly served as a United States Marine in the Korean War and later attended Luther College in Decorah. He went on to a career of teaching, touching and inspiring the lives of his students. He had lived in Tucson, Ariz., the past 12 years.

As an honored Marine who bravely and proudly served his country in the Koran War, Jim courageously fought the battle of his life beginning with his first heart attack 27 years ago, pulling away from the arms of death on several occasions.

He enjoyed life and lived it to its fullest, never complaining or giving up. In his last hours, he was surrounded by family and his dearest friends, listening to favorite jazz and classical music, and laughing and reminiscing. He was lucid, at peace and ready for his next adventure.

Survivors include his father, Steve Folsom of Postville; children Greg and Tina Malone of Decorah, Brenda and Dr. Sheldon Marks of Tucson, Ariz., Gary and Joyce Malone of Eugene, Ore., Valerie Malone of Medford, Ore. and Julia and Robert Tym of Lake Tahoe; one sister, Marge Miler of St. Louis, Mo.; grandchildren Matthew, Jordan, Ally, Leigh Anne, Brody, Alisha, Deana and Stephanie; Jeanne Malone, mother of his five children, of Denver, Colo.; many cousins; nieces and nephews; and friends all over the country.

James Malone was preceded in death by his mother, Ethel Folsom.
