Mary Riley 1925-2003

Mary L. Riley, age 78, died Wednesday, February 12, 2003, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services were held Saturday, February 15 at St. Patrick's Church in Waukon with Father Joseph Schneider officiating. Burial was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Hanson Funeral Home in Waukon assisted with arrangements. Mary Louise was born January 6, 1925, in Monti, Iowa, to Pearl and Margaret Pettit. She attended Immaculate Conception School in Lansing and St. Francis School of Nursing in La Crosse, Wis. On May 6, 1947, she married Francis Riley in La Crosse. Mary was dedicated to nursing, especially the O.B. department. In 1983, she was honored for her 30 years of service to Veterans Memorial Hospital with a special "Mary Riley Day". At that time, she had helped with the delivery of 1,067 babies. Mary was involved with the Adopted Grandparents Program in Kathy Heck's first grade class at West Elementary. She was a member of St. Patrick's Church and assisted with TelePals at St. Patrick's School.
She enjoyed volunteering at Veterans Memorial Hospital and was an avid seamstress and baby quilter. She enjoyed exercising and going to coffee with her dear friends. Survivors include one son, Mike (Holly) Riley of Cedar Rapids; five daughters, Cyndi (Ron) McKernan of Whitehall, Wis., Virginia (Dale) Kurth of Luana, Patti (Greg) Hastings of Harpers Ferry, and Mary Jo (Bob) Kelly of Waukon and Janie (Ed) Schulte of Waukon; 19 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Judy Martin of Elgin and Katie Baugher of Quincy, Ill.; and one brother-in-law, Vince Riley of La Crosse. She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis; two sons, Jack and Jim; one daughter-on-law, Alice; one grandson, Kevin Magner; and one brother, Francis Pettit. Honorary pall bearers were past and present staff of Veterans Memorial Hospital. Pall bearers were her grandsons, Jamie Riley, Darren Magner, Brandon Schulte, Brian Schulte, Josh Kelly, Travis Kuehner, Chris Riley, Adam Kurth, Garrett Kurth, and Riley McKernan.
