Helen Bahr 1925-2003

Helen A. Bahr, 77, of Waukon, died Saturday, February 1, 2003, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon following a brief illness. Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 4 at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, with Rev. Richard N. Eick officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon assisted with arrangements. Helen Anna Miller was born May 18, 1925, on the rural Postville farm of her parents, William and Louise (Krueger) Miller. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Postville and attended Postville area schools. On November 24, 1944, she married Charles "Chic" Bahr at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Postville. Helen and Chic farmed the home farm until 1971, when they moved to Waukon and worked as caretakers of Oakland Cemetery and Waukon City Park for many years. Helen also worked at several local businesses. Helen was a member of Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon and its ladies circle. She enjoyed bowling and participated in several local and state tournaments. She was also a member of the Women's National Bowling Association. Helen was very proud of the many items she crocheted over the years and, after 9-11, made each of her children an afghan of the American flag. She also enjoyed watching the Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Cubs, and figure skating on TV. Helen loved to spend time with her family and was very interested in finding the locations of where they were living or traveling to on maps. Survivors include her husband, Charles "Chic" Bahr of Waukon; two daughters, Jeanne (Peter) Pauly of Bellevue, Iowa, and Lori (Carl) Stevenson of Waukon; two sons, Gary (Carol) Bahr of Waukon and Stanley (Linda) Bahr of Caledonia, Minn.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Arlene Beisker and Leone McKee, both of Waukon; a brother, Vernon Miller and a sister-in-law, Marjorie Miller, both of Postville; and a dear friend, Geneva Rice of Waukon. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Roland Miller; and a sister, Evelyn Walsh. Casket bearers were her grandchildren.
