Fred W. Gruhn, 59, Passes On Thursday At Rochester Hospital
Post Township Farmer Leaves Wife, 7 Children; Funeral Held on Sunday
Fred W. Gruhn, 59, Post township farmer since 1923, passed away at a hospital in Rochester, Minn., last Thursday following a brief illness. He had gone to Rochester the Monday before to submit to a serious operation.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at St.Paul's Church with the Rev. Frederick R. Ludwig officiating and interment in Postville cemetery was delayed until Sunday night awaiting the arrival here of Mrs. Thomas Keen, a daughter of the deceased.
Mr. Gruhn was born in Dansig, Germany, December 11, 1885, the son of Carl Gruhn and Louise Krokowski. He was united in marriage with Miss Elsa Schaar of Berlin, Germany, on March 22, 1909, at Dansig and to this union nine children were born, of whom seven survive.
Mr. Gruhn came to the United States in May, 1923, and settled in the Postville community. Mrs. Gruhn and the children followed him here in September of the same year. The family home was established here and in 1935 they purchased the place on which they now reside. Immediatedly upon arriving in this country Mr. and Mrs. Gruhn applied for citizenship and at the expiration of the required five years of residence this was granted them.
Besides the widow, Mr. Gruhn is survived by five daughters, Martha, Mrs. Andrew Csillag, and Anna, Mrs. Herman Hartmann, both of Brooklyn, New York, Lottie, Mrs. Thomas Keen, of New Brunswick, New Jersey, Lt. Edith Gruhn of the army nurses' corps at Camp McCoy, Wis., and Gretchen at home, also two sons, Paul at home, and Robert with U.S. Army now stationed in Germany, and five grandchildren. Other relatives reside in Germany.
