Ronald Cyril “Ron” Manning, 64, of Davenport passed away April 17, 2010 after a courageous battle with cancer. Ron spent his last days surrounded by family and friends under the exquisite care of the staff at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House.

Honoring Ron’s specific wishes, Ron will be cremated, and there will be no visitation, funeral or memorial service. Memorials may be directed to the charities of your choice. A gathering of family and friends will occur at a later time in Lansing.

Ron was born September 21, 1946 to Cyril and Viola Manning of Lansing. He was the second oldest of 10 children. Ron was very proud of his roots, and even though he left Lansing in January of 1965 venturing out on his own, Lansing always was home to him.

He graduated in 1964 from St. George Catholic High School, Lansing, and always valued that quality education. He lived and worked in the Racine, WI area for several years. Ron also lived briefly in the Quad Cities area in the late 1960s while working at J.I. Case warehouse in Rock Island, IL. Ron returned to the Quad Cities in 1976, where he has remained. He worked in different capacities with various companies, during the last 30 years in the media industry as District Manager at the Quad City Times and then Circulation Manager of the Leader, the Argus/Dispatch free weekly newspaper. Due to an economic downturn in 2008, the Leader stopped circulation. Ron entered retirement in December of 2008.

Ron was a true homebody who loved doing just about everything from his kitchen: his passion for cooking, reading daily newspapers and Time magazine, and watching Jeopardy and the national news were daily rituals to him. Ron was a very caring person and closest to him were family and friends.

Ron is survived by his life partner of nearly 34 years, Rick Sundin; his mother, Vi (Jim) Strub of Lansing; a brother-in-law, Gene Mueller of Fairbury, NE; and siblings, Ginny (Joe Brandt) Manning and Don (Rose) Manning, both of Lansing, Sandee (Chuck) Wiedenhoeft of Moline, IL, John (Mike Garrity) Manning of Fort Lauderdale, FL, Debbie (Jim) Curran of Grafton, WI, and Teri (Mike) Collins of Harpers Ferry. Other survivors include his former wife, Kathy Sanders of Kenosha, WI; one daughter, Becky (Brandon Karczewski) Manning of Union Grove, WI; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews. Ron also is survived by his best little buddy, BE (Bright Eyes), his and Rick’s special dog. Additional survivors include extended family members, Anita Sundin of Davenport, and Bob and Lynda Prendergast of Parachute, CO.

Ron was preceded in death by his father, Cyril; his grandparents; an infant brother, Tommy; an infant sister, Mary Ellen; one son, Michael; one grandson, Christopher; and his eldest sister, Judy.

Ron lives on through the many lives he touched in his 63 years, and his beaming smile and great sense of humor will be especially missed. We take comfort in knowing that Ron is in God’s loving care.
