Lyle E. Zieman 1921-2003

Funeral services for Lyle Zieman were held Tuesday, January 28, 2003, at 11:00 A. M. in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville, Iowa. The Reverend James Allison officiated. Special music was provided by organist Joann Martins, soloist Ronald Meyer and Natalie Cedar. Casket Bearers were: Mark Zieman, James Zieman, John Zieman, Nile Zieman, Walter Miro, Jim Cedar, Keith Johnson. Honorary Casket Bearers were: M. F. Kiesau, M. D., R. F. Schneider, Millard Nelson, Ronald Taylor, Stanley Straate, John Schultz, Larry Reed, Matthew Erickson. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery at Postville, Iowa

Lyle Elmer Zieman, the son of Elmer Zieman and Adaila (nee Meyer) Zieman, was born March 12, 1921, on a farm in Clayton County, near Luana, Iowa. He passed away Saturday, January 25, 2003, in St. Mary's Hospital at Rochester, Minnesota. He had reached the age of 81 years, 10 months, and 13 days.

He was baptized April 30, 1921 in St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville by the Reverend E. Schmidt and confirmed there on April 14, 1935, by the Reverend R. B. Garten. He attended the Bailey Country School in Grand Meadow township and graduated from Postville High School in 1939.

Lyle was married to Leah Harris on October 19, 1941, in the Parsonage of St. Paul Lutheran Church by the Reverend Frederick R. Ludwig. To this union five children were born. They farmed in Grand Meadow Township until 1976 when they moved to Postville.

Lyle is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Leah, who died in 1987, a brother, Robert Hall Zieman, and a sister, Leeone and her husband, Irving Deering.

On June 26, 1992 Lyle was married to Beverly (nee O'Connor) Anderson in the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee, Iowa.

Lyle was an active and lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. He served on many committees and boards including, the Postville Telephone Company Board, the Postville State Bank Board from 1957 to the present, the Good Samaritan Society Board for 25 years, the Allamakee County Board of Supervisors for 14 years, the Economic Development Board for both Postville and Allamakee County, the Upper Explorerland Regional Planning Commission Executive Board, Postville Community School Board for 25 years, Agriculture Advisory Board for U. S. Congressman Jim Nussle, the Allamakee County Republican Central Committee and the Postville Lion's Club.

These were just some of the organizations that interested Lyle. He ran for the Iowa State Senate in District 16, was elected and served from 1993 until 2000. He was a member of the State Agriculture Committee, the State Economic Development Appropriations Sub-Committee, and the Small Business and Economic Development and Tourism Committee, to name a few. Lyle continued with his interest in the state and local communities. He also enjoyed playing cards with his family and friends, especially the game of "Five Hundred."

He is survived by his wife, Beverly, his children, Mark and wife, Jennifer of Postville, Nile and wife, Donna, and Jim and wife, Lora, all of Luana, Iowa, John and wife, Lisa of St. Simons Island, GA, Sue and husband, Walter Miro of Urbandale, IA, two step children, Gayle and husband, Jim Cedar of Cherokee, IA, Linda and husband, Keith Johnson of Cincinnati, OH; 12 grandchildren, Wendy (Kevin) Suddendorf, Becky (Mic) Hayes, Doug (Dawn) Zieman, Amy Zieman (fiancé, Dan Norton), Charmion (Rory) Mohning, Sherman Zieman, Lanny Zieman, Zachary Miro, Danielle Miro, Justin Zieman, Ryan Zieman, Nick Zieman, four step grandchildren, Todd (Shelly) Johnson, Jenna (Mike) Buesking, Natalie Cedar, Michael Cedar; five great grandchildren, Kylie Suddendorf, Kole Suddendorf, Foster Mohning, Adalia Mohning, Madison Johnson, a sister, Gretchen (John "Jack") Stuhr of Cedar Rapids, IA , and a sister-in-law, Beth Gustafson of East Lansing, MI.
