Leland Walby 1925-2003

Funeral services for Leland Walby were held Wednesday, January 22, 2003, at the Frankville Community Presbyterian Church at Frankville, Iowa. The Reverend James Walker officiated. The organist was Shirley Brainard, with special music by Edgar Brainard. Casket bearers were Chantilly Mincks, Leland Froelke, Noah Froelke, Angela Geno, Joshua Geno, Micah Geno, Zachariah Geno, and Alicia Froelke. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Interment will take place in the Frankville Cemetery at a later date. Leland Everett Walby, the son of Alwin Sanford and Charlotte Lenora (Peck) Walby, was born August 22, 1925, at Frankville. He passed away Friday, January 17, 2003, at the home of his daughter, Jana, in Seattle, Wash. He had reached the age of 77 years, 4 months, and 25 days. He attended the Frankville School and graduated from the Postville High School in 1943. Leland played football and excelled in baseball as a pitcher, pitching several no-hitters. On June 1, 1946, Leland was married to Janice Nellie Brainard in Postville. To this union, four daughters were born. Later, two sons, Craig and Rick, were adopted. He was a progressive farmer in Allamakee and Winneshiek counties, and a salesman for Funk's G. Hybrid Seed Corn and Walnut Grove Feeds. He received the Allamakee County Distinguished Dairyman award in 1972, as well as numerous top sales awards and contests. Leland served as President and was the first secretary for the Big Four Dairy Herd Improvement Association. He served on the Postville School Board. Other memberships include the National Farmers Organization, Frankville Cemetery Association, Northeast Iowa Community Health Board, Bloomfield Historical Society, and the Master Tree Farmer and Conservation Groups. He enjoyed his family and friends and the outdoors. Leland appreciated the woodlands and hunting mushrooms and bird watching. He liked to travel, play cards, watch sporting events, bowl, and fishing at Ham Lake, Minn. Other interests included telling jokes, dining out, and discussing politics and current events. He is survived by his wife, Janice; four daughters, Jana (John) Rupnick of Seattle Wash., Mary (Tom) Froelke of Cresco, Laura (Larry) Geno of Postville, and Wendy (Joe) Froelke of Forest Lake, Minn.; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Lester Walby of Cedar Rapids; one sister, Doris (Lyle) Ellis of DeWitt, Iowa; brother-in-law, George Waters of Motley, Minn.; and eight nephews and two nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Dorothy Waters. Leland was a lifelong member of the Frankville Presbyterian Church and served as an Elder and on the committees of the church.
