Lydia Auguste Guese 1907-1993

Lydia Auguste Guese, daughter of Frederick and "Minnie" (Stille) Guese, was born Feb. 1, 1907 on a farm in Post Township, Allamakee County, Postville, Iowa. She died on Monday, Jan. 18, 1993 in the Good Samaritan Center in Postville. She was 85.

She was baptized and confirmed in the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church in rural Postville and attended the Ludlow School #8. After graduation from eighth grade, she worked on the family farm.

She was a charter member of the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church Women, and had served in the offices of secretary and treasurer for many years, as well as teaching during the summer Bible school. Lydia sewed her clothes and made quilts. In 1957 she moved to Postville. In 1989 she became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center.

She is preceded in death by her parents, a brother-in-law, Ervin Goeke and two grandmothers, Louise Guese and Minnie Stille.

Surviving are a brother, Arthur (Doris) Guese and a sister, Minnie Goeke, all of Postville; two nieces, Janice (Marvin) Adam of Postville and Joyce (Dennis) Dunlap; one nephew, Lyle (Barbara) Guese; eight great nephews, one great niece and one great, great nephew.

Funeral services for Lydia Guese were held on Thursday, Jan. 21, 1993 at 11 a.m. in the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church, the Rev. James Elvig officiating. The arrangements were made by the Schutte Funeral Service of Postville. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Casket bearers were Irvin Flage, Duane Duvel, Bennie Fiet, Leo Klocke, Calvin Henning and Robert Klocke.
