Beacher E. Bollman, 93, of Harpers Ferry died Sunday, January 24, 2010 at his home in rural Harpers Ferry. Funeral services were held Saturday, January 30 at Living Faith United Methodist Parish, Monona Center in Monona, with Pastor Dennis Gilbert officiating. Burial with graveside military rites was held at IOOF Cemetery, Rossville. Martin Funeral Home, Waukon, assisted the family.
Beacher Eli Bollman was born August 21, 1916 in Ion, the son of Charles Ransom and Etta Mabel (Deal) Bollman. He was baptized and confirmed at the Methodist Church in Ion and attended the Ion School. Following his schooling, Beacher began cutting wood and digging ginseng with his family and worked at Ed Heim’s sawmill.
He started farming and then January 2, 1936 married Beulah Grace McClintock at the Methodist Church Parsonage in Monona.
Beacher and Beulah farmed together in the Ion area and also hauled milk and livestock for other area farmers.
During 1945 and 1946 he served in the U.S. Army and saw part of his duty in Germany. Following his discharge he returned to the farm. In 1956 they moved to Waterville, where they operated Bollman’s DX Station and continued hauling milk.
In 1958 they moved to Cresco and operated Bollman’s DX Station there and drove school bus at the local school. In 1967 Beacher and Beulah moved to Van Horne, where he was the bus mechanic for the Benton Community Schools. They returned to the Ion area of rural Harpers Ferry in 1985, where he has lived ever since.
Beacher was a member of the Methodist Church in most of the places they lived and was currently a member of Living Faith United Methodist Parish, Monona Center. He was also a member of the American Legion Posts in National, Cresco, Van Horne, and Harpers Ferry and a member of the VFW Posts in Cresco and Waukon. He had a life-long love of the outdoors and enjoyed fishing, hunting mushrooms, berries and ginseng, deer hunting with his grandkids, and watching the birds and animals around his home.
He was an expert when it came to the woods and could identify most all of the different plants and animals. During the mid-1960s he did some stock car racing with his son, Boyd, in Cresco. Beacher and Beulah not only worked together for much of their lives, but they also both enjoyed playing cards with family and friends, music and dancing, Beacher played the violin by ear, traveling throughout many parts of the United States, and spending several winters in Arizona.
Survivors include his three children, Bonnie (LeRoy) Jones of Harpers Ferry, Boyd (Mary) Bollman of Cresco, and Bev Bollman of Silverton, OR; 16 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; and 17 step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Beulah, who died in 2007; a great-grandson, Bill Moose; two brothers, Ferris and Lawrence Bollman; and two sisters, Delilah Schlitter and Violet Meyer.
Casketbearers were his grandchildren, Dale, Paul, Loren, Mark, Russell, Gary, and Keith Jones, Cindy Moose, Rick, Ron, Don, and Laura Bollman, Lisa Diersen, Kristin Osborn, and Larry and Pat Enderle.
