A RESPTECTED CITIZEN CALLED TO HIS REWARD

It is with a sorrow in which the entire community shares that we are called upon to announce the death of our friend and respected citizen, Helmuth Schutte at his home in this city at a little before the supper hour on Tuesday evening, November 2, 1926, his demise following a short period of failing health, which first manifested itself about two weeks ago, since which time his decline has been quite noticeable to those around him.
Helmuth Schmidt was born in Germany, February 26, 1844, and served in the Francoe-German war. Fifty-eight years ago he was united in marriage with Minnie Kono in Germany. In the spring of 1872 they came to America, settling first in Chicago and later in Clayton Center, Iowa, residing about two years in each of these places. They next located on a forty acre farm in Winneshiek county, near the D. A. McMartin place and for a short time on the Hammond farm now occupied by Otto Fisher. In the spring of 1884 he purchased a farm near Luana, now occupied by his son Charles, which remained the family home, until twenty-one years ago when they removed to Postville, which has been their home continuously since. Their union was blessed with eleven children, three of whom died in infancy.
He is survived by his wife and eight children -- Fred, August, Mrs. Anna Blumhagen, Louis, Charley, Lizzie, all of this city and locality, Mrs. Minnie Atwater of Los Angeles, California, and Mrs. Susie Corson of LeRoy, Minnesota, also by thirty grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was also a devoted and faithful member of St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran church of this city.
Throughout a long and useful life he was ever an honest and industrious citizen, a good husband, father, neighbor and friend, held in the highest esteem by all who came within the circle of his acquaintance.
The sympathy of friends innumerable goes out in full measure to the sorrowing family who mourn his passing.
He was aged 82 years, eight months and six days.
The funeral will be held from St. Paul's Lutheran church, this city, at two o'clock p.m. Friday, November 5th, conducted by Rev. E. Schmidt of Detroit, Michigan, and old friend and former pastor of the deceased. Interment at Postville cemetery.
