Matilda Shager Johnson
Matilda Shafer, daughter of Hans Frederick and Anna Bakkum Shager was born June 8, 1862 in Viota, Wis., and in early childhood came with her parents to the Shager home in Paint Creek Township, where she grew to womanhood, and lived until moving to Waukon 17 years ago, and died July 2, 1929, having reached her 67th year a few days previous to her death. She was confirmed in the Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church by the Rev. J.O Hjort, 51 years ago. On June 14, 1882 in the same church, she was united in marriage to Tollef Johnson by Rev H.A. Hartman. To this union were born three daughters who have ever been near her to give her joy and have been uneasing in their loving care of her through the years of her feeble strength. In the words of Proverbs it can be truly said, "of her many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. Her children rise up and call her blessed; and her husband also praiseth her." Mrs. Johnson was a noble Christian woman always faithful to all the interests of her church, an active member of the Old West Paint Creek Church from childhood, until moving to Waukon, when she transferred her membership to this church where she served efficiently in the Ladies Aid and other departments while strength permitted. She kept a keen interest in all the doings of her church to the day of her death, taking great pleasure in the visits of her pastor and wife as they brought to her God;s precious word in reading, prayer, and song. Mrs. Johnson true to her friends was interested in their problems and ready to lend help in word and deed. She was a good and faithful wife and an exceptionally loving and devoted mother. Her home rule was that of love, and loving devotions was returned to her by the children she brought up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Her last afternoon on earth was blessed with less pain and some of her last smiling words to the loved ones about her expressed her peace and the joy she had in the assurance that soon she would hear her Savior's summons, "Child, Come Home" Gently and quietly, as she had lived so she entered into the great and beautiful "Beyond" to join the dear ones gone before. She will be greatly missed by those who remain. Her husband Tollef Johnson, daughters, Hulda, Alma Kosbau, and Jeanette, and grandchildren, three sisters, and a large number of relatives and a host of friends.
