The funeral of Larry E. W. Gruel, 46, of Normal, IL, was held Friday, Jan. 13 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Bloomington, IL. Rev. Ron Lee and Rev. Robert C. Cooling officiated. Burial was in East Lawn Cemetery, Bloomington.

Mr. Gruel died at 3:34 p.m., January 10, 1988 at St. Joseph Hospital Medical Center, Bloomington, where he had been a patient for 3 weeks.

He was born March 11, 1942 in Postville, Iowa, a son of Alvin and Amanda (Luebka) Gruel. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville. He was a 1959 graduate of Postville High School.

He was employed as a Communications Specialist for General Electric Co. He was transferred to Bolingbrook, IL in 1980. While in Bolingbrook he served as a Democratic committeeman and served on the Will Co. Zoning Board of Appeals for 7 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Bloomington, IL, was a member and past commander of American Legion Post 1288, Bolingbrook, IL. He was a graduate of Iowa State University at Ames with a B.S. in Technical Journalism, a member of Beta Sigma Psi Fraternity, member of Sigma Delta Chi Professional Journalism Society.

His parents and one brother preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife, Susan M. Boatman Gruel of Normal, IL, whom he married Nov. 30, 1963 at Des Moines; one daughter, Tara Sue Gruel, Charleston, IL and one brother, Karlton Gruel, Waukon, Iowa.
