Raymond Edward Burke, 84, of rural New Albin, died Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at Franciscan Skemp Healthcare Center in La Crosse, WI, surrounded by his family.
Funeral Mass was held at 11 a.m. Monday, January at St. Joseph Catholic Church in New Albin. Interment was at St. Joseph Cemetery, rural New Albin. Rev. Daniel J. Knipper officiated at the service.
Raymond E. Burke was born April 22, 1925 in Iowa township, Allamakee County. He was the son of Joseph and Ruth Theobald Burke. He grew up and lived all of his life in Irish Hollow of rural New Albin. October 21, 1952, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth “Betty” Mauss at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Lycurgus. This was the beginning of a 47-year marriage filled with raising seven sons and one daughter. In addition to farming, Ray hauled milk for the New Albin Creamery and worked at Lee Aluminum Foundry in New Albin. Ray enjoyed playing euchre, especially the euchre tournaments at Fred’s and his longtime neighborhood card club. He also enjoyed dancing, fishing, hunting and his friends at the Senior Citizens Center and taking care of his pets. Ray was a farmer who was proud of his dairy, crops and his century farm. And above all Ray was dedicated to his faith, family and friends.
He is survived by his very special friend, Donna Luttchens of Caledonia, MN; six sons, Joe of Waukon, John of Waukon, James “Bernard” of New Albin and special friend Judy of Onalaska, WI, Jeff (Mary) of Decorah, Jay (Becky) of Davis Junction, Illinois, Justin and special friend Teri of Sutherland; one daughter, Janice (Rick) Monson of Highlandville; two brothers, Ronald of Cedar Falls, Jim (Rosemary) of Eitzen, MN; two sisters, Mary Sybil Cronin and special friend Bill of Waterloo, Ruth Burke of Waukon; fifteen grandchildren; six great-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Elizabeth “Betty” on May 10, 2000; one son, Jerome “Jerry”; a sister, Coletta Lapi; and four grandsons, Jeremiah, Jackson, Jamison Burke and Ryan Monson.
The Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home in Lansing was in charge of arrangements.
