Death of Early Settler of Allamakee County

Robert Johnson, who was born at Birid, Norway, January 18, 1862, died at his home in Jefferson township February 26, 1942, aged 80 years. He had been in failing health the past two years. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Johnson and came to this country in 1888 with his mother and wife nee Helena Gilbertson, whom he married at Birid on October 23, 1880. Their son John and daughter Anna were born in Norway. They first settled in Paint Creek township. In 1910 he moved to the farm in Jefferson township where he had since resided. His wife passed away on April 13, 1931.
They were the parents of four sons and six daughters namely John R. Johnson, Jr., Oscar Johnson, Mrs. Helen Stadsvold and Mrs. Ruth Larson, Waukon; Mrs. Henry Onsager, Decorah; Helmer Johnson, Harmony, Minn.; Mrs. Christina Campbell, Cowichei, Wash.; Mrs. Gunda Martindale, Postville, and Mrs. Belle Mickey, Mason City, who mourn the passing of a devoted and indulgent father. There are also surviving a brother and two sisters, Bendik Johnson, Decorah, and Mrs. Belle Geving, and Mrs. Hans Vold, Waukon, 28 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Two brothers Mathias and Tollef Johnson, preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held at the Old West Paint Creek Church Sunday at 12:30, conducted by the Rev. A.P. Leas with burial in the West Paint Creek Cemetery.
The pallbearers were six nephews of deceased namely: Herbert, Theodore, and Joseph Geving, John M., Melvin, and Bernard Johnson.
