Earl John Gilster died Saturday, March 21 in Lutheran hospital in LaCrosse, WI. Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 25 at 1:30 p.m. in St. Paul Lutheran church in Postville with the Rev. Julius L. Peterson officiating. Schutte funeral service of Postville was in charge of arrangements with burial in Pleasant View cemetery in Castalia.

He was born May 22, 1905 near Monona to John and Emma Schaffer Gilster. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church in Monona and attended the Figgie school near Monona. He operated a sawmill and did carpenter work until 1925 when he began farming. Oct. 14, 1931 he married Grace Welzel at St. Paul Lutheran church. They lived on a farm near Castalia until 1959 when they retired and moved to Waukon. Grace died in 1979. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, LaCrosse Lodge 1920.

Survivors include two sons, Donald (Darlene) Gilster of Castalia and Louis (Mary) Gilster of Omaha, NB, a daughter Anita Gilster of Waukon, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, three brothers, Orville, Dayton and Floyd, and five sisters, Agnes Broszeit, Alma Werner and Blance, Louise, and Alice Gilster.

Casket bearers were Leo Klocke, John Troendle, Jerry Troendle, Reginald Gross, William Votsmier and Gale Burroughs.
