Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Schutte Funeral home for Edwin M. Gass, 69, who passed away suddenly at his home Monday. The rites will be conducted by Rev. F. R. Ludwig, pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Postville cemetery.

Edwin Melanchthon Gass, son of the late Pastor John J. Gass and Wilhelmina Borgelt Gass, was born September 29, 1880 at Davenport, and departed this life October 24, 1949 at Postville, aged 69 years.

Mr. Gass was made a Christian through the sacrament of Holy Baptism on October 31, 1880 and was received into active membership in the Lutheran Church in the St. Paul's congregation at Postville.

The deceased was united in marriage with Louisa K. Kluss of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on June 21, 1911. To this union two children were born, both of whom survive the passing of their father.

Mr. Gass spent the first 21 months of his life at Davenport. He then accompanied his parents to Postville where on July 1, 1882, his father became Pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. The following 12 years were spent in the parsonage at Postville. Following the retirement of his father from the pastorate, the family home was established on a farm south of Postville. This farm continued to be the home of Mr. Gass for 50 years. About four years ago he retired from the farm to the present home.

Throughout the years Mr. Gass was active in various community enterprises. Among them was the Big-Four Fair Association which he helped to organize and in which he was actively interested in from the time of its inception until his death.

Left to mourn his passing are his widow; two children: Romelda, Mrs. Lawrence Klein of Yankton, South Dakota, and LeRoy Gass of Postville; three grandchildren; five brothers: Walter of Davenport, Roland of Minneapolis, and Harry, Arthur and Herbert, all of Postville; one sister, Hertha, Mrs. Arthur Erbe of Postville, as well as other relatives and friends.

Mr. Gass was preceded in death by his parents and five sisters, namely, Flora, Emma, Rose, Estelia and Eleanore.

Postville, Ia. – Services for Edward M. Gass, 69, who died Monday at his home here, were scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday at the Schutte Funeral Home, with the Rev. F. R. Ludwig, pastor of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, officiating and burial in Postville Cemetery.

Edwin Melanchton Gass, son of the Rev. John J. and Wilhelmina (Borgeit) Gass, was born Sept. 20, 1880 at Davenport. The family came to Postville in 1882 where his father was pastor of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. On June 21, 1911 he married Louise K. Kloss, of Milwaukee. The couple retired about four years ago.

Besides his wife he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Lawrence (Romelda) Klein, of Yankton, S. D.; a son, LeRoy, of Postville; five brothers, Arthur, Herbert and Harry, of Postville, Walter, of Davenport, and Roland of Minneapolis; a sister, Mrs. Arthur Erbe, of Postville, and three grandchildren. He was preceded by his parents and five sisters.
