John Slattery 1826-1916

SLATTERY, HOULIHAN, MCCORMACK, KELLY, SCHULTZ, HERMANSON

This week we chronicle the death of one of Allamakee County's early pioneers namely John Slattery, who passed peacefully away at the home of his son Thos. on April 14th, at the age of 90 years. His wife died April 9th, 1893. He leaves to honor the memory of a fond father two sons and one daughter Thos. and Jas. Slattery of Cherry Mound and Mrs. J.J. Houilhan of Paint Rock. His youngest daughter Hanora was called by the angel of death on Sept. 18, 1895. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Mary McCormack and five nieces, Mrs. M.J. Kelly, Mrs. Wm Shultz, Mrs. S. Hermanson, and Misses Rose and Bridget McCormack also eight grandsons, Jno. Paschal, Lawrence, and Will Slattery, Bernard, John, Emmett, and Leon Houlihan, and five granddaughters, Mayme and Nellie Slattery; Mayme, Nellie, and Stacia Houlihan. He was a native of Ireland and came here in early manhood. He was a very good neighbor and held in high esteem by all. His funeral was held on the morning of of April 16th at St.Pius church at Cherry Mound. After requiem mass for the repose of his soul by Rev. Fr. Hehir his remains were interred in the cemetery close by in their family lot to await the judgement call. May his soul rest in peace. His pall bearers were his grandsons and a nephew namely: John and Paschal Slattery, John, Bernard and Emmett Houlihan and C. McCormack.
