Funeral services for Mary Ellen "Molly" Fichtel were held Saturday, April 4, 11 a.m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville. Rev. Julius Peterson officiated. Schutte Funeral Service, Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery.

Mary Ellen "Molly" Fichtel, daughter of John and Charlotte (Neligh) Poledna, was born Nov. 11, 1922 at West Point, NE. She died Wednesday, April 1, 1987 at her home in Postville.

She was baptized April 20, 1924 at West Point, NE by Rev. W. A. Klink and confirmed Nov. 22, 1948 in the Trinity Lutheran Church at Mason City by Rev. Alvin L. Rogness. She graduated from West Point High School.

March 9, 1946 she married Dale L. Fichtel in the Trinity Lutheran Church at Vancouver, WA. The couple had 3 children. They lived in the Mason City and Oelwein areas before moving to Postville in December of 1958.

She is preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Thomas.

Surviving are her husband, Dale; 2 sons, Peter John, of Hiawatha and Paul Douglas of Lake Havasu City, AZ,; a daughter, Peggy (Mrs. Frank Hangartner) of West Union; 4 grandchildren, Deb and Lance Hangartner and Travis and Tyra Olson; a twin sister, Mary Ann "Peg" (Mrs. Clem Young) of Portland, OR and a sister, June (Mrs. Erwin Welding) of Clackamas, OR and several nieces and nephews.

Postville Woman Kills Self

Mary Ellen "Molly" Fichtel, 64, committed suicide here Wednesday evening, sometime before 10 p.m., authorities said.

Her body was found upstairs in their home by her husband, Dale, when he returned from the Tri-City Country Club between here and Luana.

The Postville Police Department was called to the scene, which in turn called the Allamakee County Sheriff's Department.

This is the 3rd suicide here in 6 weeks. Feb. 16 Leanna Morarend took her life, Curtis Eugene Kamaus of Clermont took his life March 19.
