Grant F. Flage 1905-1994

HAGER, FLAGE, OPFER, SNITKER, NAGEL

Grant F. Flage, son of David and Sophia (Hager) Flage, was born on September 24, 1905 on his parent's Ludlow Township farm near Waukon, Iowa. He died on June 14, 1994 at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon, Iowa. He was 88 years old.

Grant spent his youth in Allamakee County. He moved with his parents to Missouri for three years, from ages seven to ten. He attended Ludlow Township Schools. On February 27, 1930 he was united in marriage to Lois E. Opfer at Lois' parent's farm in Ludlow Township. To this union, one son was born.

Grant was engaged in farming for many years. He was a very active lifelong member of Zalmona Presbyterian Church, where he taught Sunday School and held numerous offices. At one time, he was active in the Brown Swiss Dairy Association. He was also self-employed in custodial work with his wife, Lois, at the Waukon State Bank and the telephone office in Waukon. Grant liked to collect things, especially brass bells and lamps.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lois; brother, Loren Flage and sisters, Ada Snitker, Elsie Snitker, Minnie Snitker, Evangeline Flage and Dorothy Nagel.

He is survived by his son, Virgil and Betty Opfer of Waukon; brother, David (Gladys) Flage of Waukon. Also surviving are grandchildren: John Opfer and Deb McCabe of Waukon, Jeanie Potter and Doug Opfer of Atlanta, Ga; and seven great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Friday, June 17, 1994 at Zalmona Presbyterian Church. Rev. James Walker and Rev. Dr. Elsa Marsland officiated. The casket bearers were Steve Flage, Aaron McCabe, Robert Opfer, Ronald Opfer, Calvin Snitker and Donald Snitker. Arrangements were by Martin Funeral Home in Waukon. Burial was held at the Zalmona Cemetery.
