Bernita R. Hanson, 85, of Waukon died Monday, October 19, 2009 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services were held Thursday, October 22 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Waukon, with Rev. Lynn G. Groe officiating. Burial was held in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon.
Bernita Ruth Hanson was born February 15, 1924 on the Ludlow Township, rural Waukon farm of her parents, Albert John and Esther Anna (Duvel) Kloke. She was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Presbyterian Church in rural Postville and attended Ludlow #7 rural school. Bernita did housekeeping for the Marion Nolting family and others in the Waukon area.
July 17, 1942 she married Emil Hanson at the Bethlehem Presbyterian Parsonage. Bernita and Emil farmed together for several years in Makee Township, where they milked cows, raised chickens and sold eggs. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and was very active in its ladies groups and circles. Bernita enjoyed sewing, quilting, crocheting, embroidery work, fishing, babysitting for family, cooking, and baking - especially banana bread, cinnamon rolls and oatmeal cookies. Her most favorite times were spent with her family and friends.
Survivors include her children, Richard (Vera) Hanson, Elaine (Edward) Knuppe and James Hanson, all of Waukon; seven grandchildren, Nolan Hanson, Debbie (Terry) Johnson, Sheila (Bruce) Snitker, Vicky (Tim) Phipps, Carrie (Shane) Sievers, Tim (Sue) Meister and Jeffery (Amy) Meister; nine great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Leo (Dorothy) Klocke and Milo (Ruby) Kloke, both of Waukon. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Emil, who died in 1967; a sister, Mary Ann Miller; and a brother, Robert Kloke.
Honorary casketbearers were Nolan Hanson, Cassie, Kennedy and Catherine Sievers, Mike McDowell, Brandon, Chad and Ryan Meister, Vanessa Phipps, and Matt Snitker. Casketbearers were Tim Steffenson, Lee Hermeier, Brad Berns, Dale Donahue, Al, John and Jeff Hanson, and Brad Larkin.
