Carma Joyce Myers, age 89, of Waukon passed away Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon following a long illness. Funeral services were held Monday, October 12 at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church, rural Waterville, with burial in the church cemetery. Hanson Funeral Home in Waukon was in charge of arrangements.

Carma Joyce (Ellefson) Myers was born February 23, 1920 in the farm home of her parents, Eilert and Helen (Lier) Ellefson of Waterville. She was baptized and confirmed at the Old Paint Creek Lutheran Church of rural Waterville. Carma graduated from Waterville High School in 1938 and attended Wisconsin Business University in LaCrosse, WI. In 1941, she married Leo Myers of Decorah. They were blessed with two sons, Gene of Waterville and Rick (Teresita) of Willis, TX. They were later divorced.

Carma worked in Waukon in the Recorder’s Office in the County Courthouse and was also employed by IMPRO Products as their secretary bookkeeper. Much of Carma’s life over the years revolved around taking care of her son, Rick, after he was diagnosed at 16 months with Spinal Muscular Atrophy. With a loving mother’s care, after her son Rick graduated from High School, they moved to Chicago, IL, where he attended college while she worked at CBS television station. In 1972, they moved to Houston, TX because of Rick’s internship. Carma worked as a secretary for the Texas Rehabilitation Commission and the Regional IV Texas Education Agency. In 1980, after her son married, she returned to Waterville to care for her father who was not well.

Her mother had passed away and with a daughter’s loving care, he lived another nine years. Her last several years, she remained in her home in Waterville. She then found time with family and friends to enjoy bowling, fishing, and made several long-distance trips to visit and assist her sons as needed. In 2007, Carma moved into the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Waukon, where she was surrounded by many caring people up to her last breath.

Carma (Ellefson) Myers was preceded in death by her parents, Eilert and Helen of rural Waterville; one brother, Everett, and his wife Lee, Ellefson of Waukon. Survivors include two sons, Gene Myers of Waterville and Rick Meyers and wife Teresita of Willis, TX; one granddaughter, Lori (Myers) and her husband, Todd Meyer, of Waukon; two great-grandchildren, Chelsey and Courtney Meyer of Waukon; one niece, Susan (Ellefson) and husband, Joe Papp, of Lansing; one nephew, Roger and wife, Lynn Ellefson, of Waterville; and several first and second cousins.

Carma was a woman who cared deeply for her family and made them the primary vocation of her life. She often expressed that her strong faith in the “Power of God,” growing up with loving parents, connection with her pastor, her church, and having caring friends guided her through many stressful situations in her life’s journey.
