Ivan Walter Tippery 1927 - 2009

Ivan W. Tippery, 82, of rural Hokah, died on Saturday morning, Sept. 5, 2009 in his home.
Ivan was born on May 6, 1927 in New Albin, Iowa to Walter and Clara (Olson) Tippery. When he was in the ninth grade his father died suddenly. Ivan went to live in South Dakota with his aunt and uncle.

He enlisted in the Army in 1944 and spent time in Germany until his discharge in 1947. He then worked for his brother-in-law Ed Russell in Harmony.

He was united in marriage to Agnes Murray of Hokah at St. Peter’s parsonage on Nov. 26, 1947. They left for Dubuque, Iowa in December of that year, where Ivan was employed by Dubuque Packing Co. Ivan began working at Bakalars Bros Sausage factory and was employed there for 40 years. In his retirement years, he drove school bus for Ready Bus Line for 15 years.

Ivan is survived by his wife Agnes, five sons, Lee (Lisa) and Tom (Nadeen) of Hokah, Bob (fiancé Ronda Bond) of Mindoro, Wis, Jim of Hokah and Jerry (Jeanne) of Houston, Minn, six grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, two sisters, Arlene (Hugh) Donaldson of Quitman, Texas and Belva (Charles) Abbott of Woodhull, Ill, two sisters-in-law, Marian (Harold) Coughlin of Hokah and Ella Mae (Roy) Humm of La Crosse, many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by infant twins, Kerry and Kathy.

A Mass of Christian Burial followed by military honors will be held on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Hokah. Father Paul Breza will officiate. If friends are unable to attend the funeral, they are invited to a celebration of Ivan’s life following the funeral from noon until 4 p.m. at the Hokah City Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Peter’s School, any Veteran’s Association, or the Polish Museum in Winona.

The Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crescent is in charge of arrangements.
