Harva L. Oelberg, 69, of rural Luana, died Friday, March 10, 2000, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, IA following a brief illness. Funeral services were held Monday, March 13 at 11 a.m. at Forest Mills United Methodist Church in rural Postville, IA, with Rev. Steve Campbell officiating. Burial with graveside military rites will be in Oakland Cemetery in Waukon. There was a Masonic memorial service at 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Harva Lee Oelberg was born October 30, 1930 on the Franklin Township, rural Luana, IA, farm of his parents, Albert and Emma (Leppert) Oelberg. He attended Franklin #3 "Red School" rural elementary and graduated from Waukon High School in 1949. After working a short time for area farmers, Harva served from 1951 until 1955 in the US Air Force seeing duty as a personnel clerk in North Africa and attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. On October 25, 1955 he married Vernalene Whitten in Dennison, TX. They returned to Allamakee County where Harva spent a short while working for area farmers again before farming on his own near Churchtown. In 1963 they returned to the Oelberg home place in Franklin Township where he has lived ever since.

Harva was a member of Forest Mills United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School and held various offices; Waukon Masonic Lodge #154 where he served as Worshipful Master for 8 years before transferring to Brotherly Love Lodge #204 in Postville; Allamakee County Compensation Board; Franklin Township Clerk; Allamakee County Planning & Zoning Board, Allamakee County Republican Central Committee, life member of Allamakee County Historical Society, Red School Committee, Franklin Township ASCS Committee, VFW, American Legion, Amvets, and the nominating committee for Calhoun Creamery. He loved to visit with family and friends and share special times with them. He was well read, kept current on world affairs and had a passion for operating his farm.

Harva is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Andrew and Charles. Survivors include his wife Vernalene of Luana, 3 sons, Dr. Thomas (Kristy) of New Ulm, MN and Frederick and Ronald, both of Luana, 4 daughters, Sandy (Sam) Bacon of Postville, Sheila (Larry) Pape of Luana, Sherie (Richard) Moffitt of Roland, IA, and Selina (John) Heidmann of Memphis, TN, 7 grandchildren, Brett & Brittany Bacon, Mackenzie & Nicholas Moffitt, Liana Pape and Wyatt & Sydney Oelberg, 3 brothers, George (Libby) of Hyattsville, MD, Dr. Chris (Arlene) Elma, IA, and Col. (Retired) Kermit (Gladys) of Seneca, SC, and 3 sisters, Beulah Amundson of Monona, Iva Marie Vance of Viroqua, WI, and Sara (Donald) Enyart of Postville, IA.

Casketbearers were Keith Mason, Lynn Morrow, Neil Becker, Mayhew Eaton, Lawrence Powell, Keith Roffman, Larry Lamborn, and Bill Roe, Jr.
